The state of Arunachal Pradesh occupies a unique position in terms of its huge forest cover of 79.6 % and also for being one of the eighteen biodiversity hotspots of the world. Coupled with the ethnic mosaic of tribal communities, the state offers a blissful experience to everyone. The state has more than 500 species of fauna and is home to four major cats, namely, Royal Bengal Tiger, Common Leopard, Clouded leopard and Snow leopard.
Kamlang tiger reserve, spread over an area of 783 sq km in Lohit and Anjaw districts, is one of the youngest tiger reserves in the country. It represents the easternmost distribution of the Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity hotspots and is replete with unique flora and fauna including several species which are endemic to this region.
It is also home to three major cats viz Tiger, Leopard and Clouded leopard, as well as harbors rare lesser feline species like the Golden cat, Marbled cat and Leopard cat. It is also recognized as one of the Important Bird Areas by BirdLife International.
I would like to congratulate the team of Kamlang tiger reserve that has come out with this publication, “Kamlang tiger reserve- at a glance”, to bring all records of the species along with a vivid tale narrating the interdependence of the local community, the Mishmis with the reserve. This book will surely be an asset for researchers all over the country and showcase the unique forest ecosystem and biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh before the world, thereby it will also raise the eco-tourism potential of Eastern Arunachal Pradesh. Best wishes for the endeavor.
